Over 75% of S. Koreans support Park's impeachment

More than 75 percent of South Koreans still support the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, despite her offer to cut her term short on the condition that parties agree on the timeline and procedure for her departure, according to a poll released Thursday.

According to Real Meter's survey conducted after she made the speech Tuesday, 75.3 percent supported Park's ouster, down 4.2 percentage points from a week earlier. The survey was conducted on 1,039 South Koreans this week with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Those opposed to the impeachment edged up 2.6 percentage points to 17.3 percent.

In her third public address since a massive corruption scandal broke in late October, Park said she would follow the political parties' decision, including the shortening of her presidency.

Political pundits said supporters of the impeachment may have changed their minds out of concern that the forced removal of the president would bring more confusion to state affairs.

The ruling Saenuri Party currently proposes letting Park step down voluntarily by the end of April and holding a new presidential election in June. (Yonhap)
