Drone fans get designated park

Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has designated a model aircraft field at Gwangnaru Hangang Park in Seoul as “Hangang Drone Park,” where citizens can fly drones without permission.
The SMG announced the designation on Saturday.
Along with concerns about drone-related accidents, article 23 of the Aviation Act bans people from flying drones in congested areas such as Gangnam subway station in Seoul.
People wanting to fly drones often visited the model aircraft field (27,000 square meters) to do so.
Here, they were able to fly the mini-aircraft after receiving lessons from the Korea Aero Models Association.
Now, the newly designated park, allows people to fly drones weighing less than 12 kilograms to up to 150 meters high without permission.
After making a reservation online, users can fly drones free for up to three hours. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Although the drone industry has a lot of potential to grow, it still has many obstacles that limit drone users, such as no-fly zones, restricted air space, or air control zones,” said Hangang Project Headquarters head Hwang Bo-yeon.
“That’s why we designated the drone park. We hope that citizens can fly drones safely at Hangang Drone Park.”
