Scholar Noam Chomsky sends message of support for Korean protester
American linguist and political commentator Noam Chomsky sent a message to a protester in critical condition after being hit by a water cannon in a recent anti-government rally, Huffington Post Korea reported Friday.
"Justice for Baek Nam-ki, Korean workers and farmers now!" the messages read in Korean and English.
According to the report, Chomsky’s message was delivered in a photograph with peace activist Christine Ahn and Simone Chun, a lecturer at Northeastern University, in his office at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Nov. 17. Huffington Post Korea's article published the picture.
Chomsky expressed concern over the (South Korean) government's control of media and stressed the importance of intellectuals, independent media and social activists' roles, according to Chun, the article said.
Chomsky has made a number of pronouncements on South Korean politics in the past. Critics say that he is critical of the pro-U.S. South.
