Kim Su-nam nominated for top prosecutor

Deputy Prosecutor General Kim Su-nam has been nominated for the top job, Cheong Wa Dae said Friday.
The presidential office said Kim, 56, will succeed outgoing Prosecutor General Kim Jin-tae, who will retire on Dec. 1.
“Kim Su-nam has had knowledge and experience in diverse prosecution affairs,” presidential spokesman Jeong Yeon-guk said. “He has experience in investigation into corruption cases, and has strong faith to keep law and order. He is the right person to lead the prosecution with strong leadership to eradicate society’s deep-rooted corruption.”
After the nomination, Kim told reporters he feels a huge responsibility for the important position. “I still have to go through the confirmation hearing at the National Assembly, so I’ll focus on preparing for that,” he said.
The hearing is expected to be held in the middle of November.
Kim, born in Daegu, majored in law at Seoul National University. He started his career as a judge, but then became a prosecutor. He has held posts including planning office head at the Ministry of Justice and heads of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office, Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office and Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office.
While at the Suwon office, he directed the investigation into the case of Lee Seok-ki, a former lawmaker of the now-disbanded Unified Progressive Party, who was indicted for conspiring to topple the government in the event of war with North Korea.
