A family runs illegal gambling site

Four members of a family in Daegu were booked without physical detention for running an illegal gambling website.

Police said Monday that four men -- Kim, 40, Kim’s older brother, 44, his father, 72, and his nephew, 19 -- ran Sports Toto, a gambling website, which had around 1,000 subscribers for six months from last February.

Kim’s family rented a “gosiwon,” a residential facility packed with small single-rooms and used overseas IP addresses to avoid police detection.

Kim induced his family to run the gambling site after he fled from police for fraud for five years and six months. Kim had his older brother manage the website, the nephew recruited new subscribers and his father withdrew the profits.

Police said Kim insisted he only made 30 million won from the gambling site over the last six months.
