President Park Geun-hye Monday named Lee Seong-ho, current chief of the Seoul Central District Court, to lead the nation’s human rights watchdog.

Lee, 57, has served as a judge for about 30 years. Lee is expected to replace Hyun Byeong-cheol the current chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.

The nominee, who will serve a three-year tenure, will go through a parliamentary confirmation hearing. The National Assembly’s approval, however, is not mandatory for the appointment.
