North urges South to join its anti-US fight

By Jun Ji-hye

North Korea called on the South to join its fight against the United States in order to achieve unification of the two Koreas, Sunday.

“The North and South need to join forces to remove American invaders from South Korean soil,” said the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland (DFRF) in a letter of plea.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the North’s state-controlled media, reported release of the letter on the occasion of 96th anniversary of the March 1 independence movement.

Referring to the U.S. as the main enemy, the DFRF said that the entire nation needs to come forward and fight against Washington.

“The U.S. is the root of all misfortunes and disasters facing the people in the South,” the letter said.

It also criticized Seoul and Washington’s annual exercises Key Resolve and Foal Eagle, which will begin today, labeling them as aggressive war practices and actions that will result in a nuclear disaster on the Korean Peninsula.

The reclusive state has called on Seoul and Washington to cancel the drills, saying it will abandon a possible nuclear test in response.

But the allies have refuted the North’s proposal and claimed that the drill is purely defensive and part of annual routine military maneuvering between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Pyongyang’s state-run Rodong Sinmun urged the South Korean government to switch its inter-Korean policy, saying that Seoul is responsible for the strained South-North relations.

“The South should stop producing deceptive calls for inter-Korean talks,” said the newspaper. “It should take more practical measures to improve relations between the two Koreas.”

It argued that neither President Park Geun-hye’s unification bonanza initiative nor a move to draft a constitution for a unified Korea can help resolve any issues involving unification.

“They will only worsen confrontation of the two different systems,” it said.
