Prominent figures in bar operator’s bribery list on CDs

Dozens of government officials, including prosecutors, police officers and people at Cheong Wa Dae, are included in a bribery list a 40-year-old bar operator is alleged to have made, according to investigators.

The bribery list was made by the bar operator, nicknamed “Room Salon Emperor,” on two CDs before he was arrested for promoting prostitution and tax evasion in July, 2010, a special inspector said.

There is a list of those who received bribes and entertainment in detail, including occupations and dates, the inspector said. For example, the suspect identified as Lee wrote down: “5 million won to a person at XX police station, Jan. 1, 2010.”

On the list are also broadcasting firms’ senior staff members and journalists as well as government officials, including policemen, firemen, prosecutors and Cheong Wa Dae personnel, according to the investigator.

The official, who requested to remain anonymous, said the list could contain evidence of criminal acts such as offering bribes. “It could be a critical clue in the development of the investigation. Those involved in the bribery charges are expected to be far more than the 30 who have already been unveiled, although all the records on the CDs need to be verified.”

"Lee made the list in case of emergencies but it’s uncertain whether prosecutors have got the list or not as a few were able to access it,” said a friend of the suspect.

The prosecution refused to confirm whether they had the list or not, saying, “The case is under investigation.” It is reported that the suspect is not being cooperative, although he promised to provide the list at first.
