Seoul to host int‘l nuclear security symposium

Korea will host a nuclear security symposium late this week to help the international community cope with outstanding issues related to atomic energy use and safety, the government said Tuesday.

The Seoul Nuclear Security Symposium, to be held on Friday in Seoul, will be attended by 170 foreign representatives from such organizations as the International Atomic Energy Agency, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the International Criminal Police Organization, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said.

The state commission in charge of South Korea's nuclear safety said in addition to foreign participants, 100 nuclear local safety experts will be present for the one-day meeting.

The gathering takes place ahead of the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday, and is expected to give frontline experts a chance to exchange views on issues that will be touched at the summit meeting.

Organizers for the symposium said the gathering will be the largest of its kind, with nuclear experts from 46 countries to take part in the four main discussion sessions.

The sessions will focus on nuclear security and terrorism, how to resolve the nuclear threat facing the global community, atomic energy safety and creating a governance regime for the nuclear sector after 2014. (Yonhap)
