Korea Times photojournalist Shim Hyun-chul won an award at an annual news photograph contest hosted by the Korea Press Photographers’ Association.

Shim won second prize in the Spot News category with his photo of a middle-aged woman hitting Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon.

In the photo titled “Head-Smacked Seoul Mayor,” the 32-year-old photographer captured the moment on Nov. 15 when a woman approached Park during a civil defense drill briefing at City Hall Station and suddenly struck his head twice, shouting “Communist!”

Since joining The Korea Times in 2006, Shim has won two other best photo awards from the association.

His work and the other 130 award-winning pieces are being exhibited under the theme “Capture the Moment & the Truth” at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts from Wednesday through March 13.
