Bin Laden T-shirts make big hit

A U.S. student earned $300,000 (325 million won) for five days, by selling T-shirts “to mark the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden,” a local news report said Tuesday.

The student, however, said he will donate all proceedings to society as it was morally questionable for him to make money by trying to take advantage of the death of a person, chosun.com reported.

As soon as he learned of bin Laden’s death at 11:30 p.m. on May 1, the 23-year-old student in New York City hurriedly ran into his home. He then secured a domain, named “Osamadeadtees.com,” and began work to open a homepage.

He got ready for sales around 3:30 a.m. the following day by launching the website. He began to sell his T-shirts for $12 (13,000 won) each. Those T-shirts were inscribed with the word such as “Justice has been done” and “Thanks, SEAL Team 6” or an image of the al-Qaida chief.

The hurriedly made website looked shabby, but his business made a big hit. For the first two days, he earned $120,000 (130 million won). He expanded his goods to souvenirs, such as stickers, and posters. The turnover finally amounted to $300,000.

But he drew criticism for trying to make money by exploiting the death of a person. Some raised the possibility of the student being a target of Islam militants, according to the report.

'라덴 사살 기념' 셔츠로 1주만에 3억 대박

오사마 빈 라덴 사살 직후 그의 죽음을 축하하는 티셔츠를 만들어 판매한 미국의 한 대학생이 닷새 만에 30만 달러(3억2500만원)의 수입을 올렸다.

하지만 9일 “남의 죽음을 이용해 돈을 번다는 건 옳지 못한 것 같다”며 수익금 전액을 사회에 기부하겠다고 밝혔다고 조선일보 인터넷판이 10일 보도했다.

뉴욕시립대 학생인 모리스 해러리(23)는 지난 1일 밤 11시30분 빈 라덴 사망 소식이 전해진 직후 잽싸게 집으로 뛰어가 ‘Osamadeadtees.com’(오사마 사망 티셔츠)이란 이름의 도메인을 확보했고, 홈페이지 제작 작업을 시작했다.

홈페이지는 다음 날 새벽 3시30분쯤 ‘영업 준비’가 끝났고, 해러리는 사이트에서 빈 라덴 사살 직후 오바마 대통령이 말했던 ‘Justice has been done’(정의는 이뤄졌다), ‘고마워요, 실 팀6(SEAL Team 6·빈 라덴 제거 작전에 투입된 것으로 알려진 미 해군 특수부대)’ 등의 문구나 빈 라덴의 사진이 담긴 티셔츠를 장당 12달러(1만3000원)씩에 팔기 시작했다.

홈페이지는 급조된 탓에 허술하게 만들어졌지만, 사업은 대성공이었다. 해러리의 손에는 이틀 만에 12만 달러(1억3000만원)가 들어왔고, 그는 사업 영역을 기념 스티커와 포스터로까지 확대했다. 수입은 30만 달러까지 치솟았다고 이 보도는 전했다.
