Police investigating death of a man in crucifixion case
By Kim Rahn
Police are investigating the death of a man in what appears to be a crucifixion.
The 58-year-old taxi driver, identified only as Kim, was found dead near a deserted mine in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, at around 6 p.m. Sunday, a week after the Easter holiday.
Police said a former pastor and neighbors described Kim as a “religious fanatic.” A beekeeper who found the body told police that Kim, wearing only boxer shorts, was dead on a wooden cross with his hands and feet being nailed to it, like Jesus Christ’s execution.
Kim was wearing a crown of thorns and had scars on his right side as if a spear had pierced him, according to the witness.
According to a police examination, his feet were nailed to the cross, while holes were made in his hands with an electric drill and were then put on the nails which had been driven in the cross in advance.
In a nearby tent in which Kim lived were found the drill, a chisel, a hammer, a drawing for cross making and a note showing how to hang a person on a cross. There were also a whip and a mirror, which Kim seemed to have used in self flagellation..
The mirror was placed in such a way as to allow Kim to see himself hanging on the cross, police said.
Two smaller crosses were planted on each side of the big cross on which he was nailed.
Police confirmed that before dying Kim talked about religion with a former pastor who lives near the mine. The former pastor testified that Kim was fanatical so he tried to avoid talking about religion but just about everyday life.
Police are investigating details based on testimonies from Kim’s acquaintances that he gave himself to religion. Police have conducted an autopsy. They need to investigate further to figure out the exact cause of death.
“There is a chance of murder, but it is also possible that he voluntarily nailed himself up or someone assisted the suicide. We are questioning his family and acquaintances as well as investigating how he obtained the cross and the tools,” a police officer of North Gyeongsang Police Agency said.
