Sneaky smokers bring KTX to sudden stop

Some smokers cannot resist the temptation to light up in the restroom aboard a bullet train. But such acts could turn out very risky and costly.

Last Friday, Korea’s bullet train KTX-Sancheon heading to Masan came to a sudden stop. As soon as the train came to a halt, the captain announced that the train came to an emergency stop as the fire alarm went off after a passenger smoked a cigarette in the bathroom.

According to Korail, the state-run railroad operator, the fire alarms within the train go off when smoke passes a certain level. If the crew cannot find the cause of the alarm, the captain has no choice but to stop the train.

There have been six sudden stops due to cigarette smoke since January.

Korail said that since it is very difficult to find the smoker the chances of punishing the culprit are very slim.

Even if Korail finds the person responsible they only have to pay a fine of 30,000 won.

``The interior of the KTX is made of incombustible material, so there is almost no possibility of a fire. But when the train makes a sudden stop it can be dangerous and the delay can cause further inconvenience for passengers,’’ a Korail official said.

KTX-산천 담배연기로 ‘비상 정지’ 잦아

일부 흡연자는 KTX 열차를 탔을 때 휴게실에서 흡연 욕구를 참기 어렵다. 이런 흡연행위는 위험을 감수해야 하고 값비싼 대가가 치를 수도 있다.

지난 1일 서울발 마산행 KTX-산천 열차가 갑자기 정차하는 사태가 발생했다. 열차가 서자 마자 KTX 기장은 한 승객이 화장실에서 담배를 피워 화재 경보기가 작동 열차가 비상 정지하게 되었다는 안내 방송을 했다.

코레일에 따르면 담배 연기가 일정 수준을 넘으면 KTX 열차내의 화재 경보가 작동한다는 것. 만약 승무원들이 경보의 원인을 찾지 못하면 기장은 열차를 세우는 것 이외에 다른 선택을 할 수 없다.

코레일은 흡연자를 색출해 내기가 어렵기 때문에 ‘범인’을 찾을 가능성은 미미하다고 밝혔다.

설령 범인을 찾아낸다 해도 불과 3만원의 벌금에 처해진다고.
