Man arrested for killing wife, concealing body for 12 years

Police detained a 50-year-old man, Lee, Tuesday, on suspicions of killing his wife, whose body was found at home by their daughter presumably 12 years after the murder.

The investigation began after a report from Lee’s 20-year-old daughter, who said she found a woman’s body covered with plastic wrapping in her house in Yongsan, Seoul, at around 9:45 p.m. last Saturday.

The body was covered with more than 10 layers of vinyl wrapping and bedclothes and placed into a large cardboard box. There was a stab wound on the woman’s face.

The girl told police that she was removing the box with her boyfriend as she was moving to another house. As the box was very heavy, she opened it and found the body inside, according to police. She said that she hadn’t opened it before because she thought it was a box of junk belonging to her runaway father.

Police confirmed through fingerprint identification that the dead woman was her mother. The daughter said she didn’t remember her mother’s face and that her mother went missing when she and her father moved to the current house 12 years ago.

She also told police that she remembers seeing her father wrap the box with tape, so police suspect the father might have killed the woman. The daughter never noticed any smell as the body was sealed tightly, police said.

Lee, the father, lived there with the daughter for three years since 1999 but then left. Afterward he came once or twice a month to pay the rent, but hasn’t come in the last few months so the girl had to move out as she failed to pay the rent.

“We suspect Lee murdered his wife 12 years ago. We are investigating why, how and exactly when he did so,” a police officer at Yongsan Police said.

12 년 전 비극 부른 부부싸움…`살인의 재구성'

1999년 6월19일 밤 11시께 서울 성동구 성수동 이모(51)씨의 집.

다음날 용산구 후암동의 한 다세대주택 1층 단칸방으로 이사할 예정이었던 이씨는 이사 문제로 아내 윤모(당시 39세)씨와 심하게 말다툼을 벌였다.

새 방을 구했으니 그쪽으로 가자는 이씨에게 아내는 `이사 가지 않겠다'며 완강히 반대했다. 그러자 참다못한 이씨는 부엌에 있던 흉기를 들어 우발적으로 윤씨의 목을 찔렀다.

숨진 아내를 본 이씨는 당황해 어쩔 줄을 몰랐다. 부인의 시신을 가로ㆍ세로 50cm, 높이 1m 크기의 종이 상자에 담고는 흰색 비닐로 10겹 이상 닥치는대로 둘러싸 밀봉했다.

다음날 아침이 밝자 이씨는 부인의 시신을 이삿짐인 것처럼 가장해 후암동 새 집으로 옮겼다.

그리고는 같은 건물에 사는 이웃에게 `아내는 병원에 있다'고 둘러댔다. 이사한 이후 이씨는 딸을 놔둔 채 가출해 한 달에 2~4회 정도만 집에 들렀다.

당시 여덟 살이던 딸 이모(20)양은 2~3평 남짓한 이 단칸방에서 시신이 담긴 상자와 함께 12년간이나 생활했다.

어느덧 성년이 된 이양은 지난 12일 밤 다른 집으로 이사를 가기 위해 이삿짐을 나르면서 `비극의 상자'에 얽힌 비밀을 발견하게 됐다.

상자가 지나치게 무거운 것을 이상하게 여긴 이양과 그의 친구가 상자를 뜯어보기 시작했고, 이상한 냄새가 나자 내용물을 확인하기 위해 파출소에 신고한 것이다.

이양은 경찰에서 "옛날부터 아버지 짐으로만 생각해 시신이 있는 줄 몰랐다. 어렸을 때라 어머니에 대한 기억이 전혀 없다"고 말한 것으로 알려졌다.

서울 용산경찰서는 '아버지가 상자를 테이프로 밀봉하는 모습을 본 기억이 있다'는 이양의 진술에 따라 이씨를 유력한 용의자로 지목하고 행방을 추적, 경기도 부천에 있는 지인의 집에 은신해 있던 그를 15일 오전 검거했다.

이씨는 경찰 조사에서 범행을 자백하고 "숨진 부인과 딸에게 미안해 시신을 가지고 있었다. 영원히 시신을 보관하고 싶었다"고 말한 것으로 전해졌다.

이씨 부녀와 같은 건물에 사는 한 이웃은 "이씨는 경제적 사정이 좋지 않아 집세가 밀리는 경우가 많았는데 그게 부끄러워 집에 찾아오지 못한 적이 있을 정도로 여린 사람이었다"고 말했다.

경찰은 살해 방법과 범행 동기 등을 조사한 뒤 이씨에 대해 살인 및 사체유기 혐의로 이날 중 구속영장을 신청할 방침이다.
