Cabby commits suicide over falling income

A taxi driver killed himself presumably due to declining income.

Police said Thursday that the wife of the cabdriver, whose name was not disclosed, found her husband had hung himself at their home in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, at around 7:10 p.m. Wednesday.

There were no specific wounds on his body except for that of strangling, according to police.

Police are still investigating the case, following the bereaved family’s testimony that the cab driver suffered from financial difficulties and recently failed to pay the taxi company the designated amount of money.

Taxi drivers hired by taxi companies are required to pay a certain set fee to their company. As companies raise the payment amount and gas expenses rise, many cab drivers say they sometimes make less money than the designated amount so they fail to pay the company and can bring nothing home.
