FMD spreads to South Gyeongsang Province

By Kim Rahn

A pig farm in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, tested positive for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) amid a nationwide vaccination program and quarantine efforts.

This is the first time that an FMD case has been reported in the province. The local government said it will cull 14,000 pigs at 10 farms within a 500-meter radius of the affected farm.

The latest outbreak raises the number of FMD infections to 137 across the nation. The deadly animal disease has spread almost nationwide since it was first confirmed on Nov. 29 at a farm in North Gyeongsang Province.
