Translators in 14 languages on hand

English is the official language of the G20 Seoul Summit, but diverse languages will be heard and spoken throughout the two-day meeting as the heads of 25 states and representatives of several international organizations engage in heated debates over foreign exchange and other pending global issues.

Providing qualified professional interpretation services in a wide range of languages will be the key to drawing a consensus on various contentious agenda items among the leaders of the advanced and emerging economies.

The G20 Seoul Summit Organizing Committee has recruited a total of 42 seasoned interpreters, including three Koreans, for the most significant international event ever taking place in the Asia’s fourth largest economy. All of them have over 20 years of experience on the job. Eighteen additional interpreters will be mobilized to provide translation services as circumstances require for related events on the sidelines of the summit.

Korean interpreters will translate from English to Korean, and vice versa. The 39 non-Korean interpreters will provide translation services between English and 12 other languages, including French, Spanish and Arabic.

For instance, when President Lee Myung-bak speaks in Korean, his speech will first be translated into English by a Korean interpreter. Then, the English version of his speech will be converted into 12 other languages by respective interpreters.

An official at the organizing committee said all 42 interpreters were highly recommended by interpreter associations in their respective home countries. ``They are also approved by their governments. They are the best of the best.’’

Meanwhile, the official language at the G20 Business Summit will be Korean meaning all translation services will be provided by Korean interpreters. For instance, when a speaker talks in Arabic, his speech will be first translated into Korean, and then into the other foreign languages.

42명이 G20에서 14개 언어 통역 참여

G20 서울 정상회담의 공식 언어는 영어이다. 그러나 25명의 국가 및 국제 기구 대표들이 외환 등 세계 문제 관련 토론을 하게 돼 정상회담 2 일 동안 다양한 언어를 듣고 말하게 된다.

각종 언어로 자격있는 전문적인 통역을 제공하는 것이 선진 및 개발도상국간의 각종 첨예한 의제에 합의를 이끌어내는 데 열쇠가 될 것이다.

정상회담 조직위원회는 아시아 4대 경제국인 한국에서 열리는 가장 중요한 국게 행사를 위해 한국인 3명 포함 42명의 통역사를 채용했다. 모두가 자신의 분야에서 20년 이상의 경력을 가지고 있다. 18명을 추가로 동원 정상회담과 별도로 열리는 행사에서 필요로 해 통역을 해 줄 계획이다.

한국인 통역사들은 영어를 한국어로 국어를 영어로 번역한다. 39명의 비 한국인은 영어와 불어, 스페인어, 아랍어 등 그 밖의 12개 언어 간의 통역을 담당한다.

예를 들어 이명박 대통령이 우리말을 하면 이는 우선 한국인 통역사를 통해 영어로 통역된다. 그 다음 영어로 된 것은 그 밖의 12개 언어로 각국의 언어 통역사에 의해 번역된다.
