Ex-Foreign Minister Yu staying in US as researcher at Stanford U.

Former Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan, who was disgraced over employment of his daughter at the ministry, is reported to stay for a long time as a researcher at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Diplomatic sources said Sunday that Yu recently went to the United States at the invitation of the Asia-Pacific Research Institute affiliated with Stanford University after staying in Japan during the Chuseok harvest holiday, in the wake of the eruption of recruiting his daughter.

As a result, Yu is reported to have submitted a document on why he would not attend the parliamentary inspection as witness slated for Monday at the Foreign Affairs and Trade and Unification Committee of the National Assembly.

The foreign ministry is expected to hardly avoid criticism for his overseas stay despite the planned parliamentary inspection.

딸 특채 파문으로 자진사퇴한 유명환 전 외교통상부 장관이 스탠퍼드대학 객원연구원 자격으로 미국에서 장기 체류할 것으로 알려졌습니다.

외교소식통은 파문 이후 추석 연휴기간 일본에 체류하던 유 전 장관이 최근 스탠퍼드대 아시아 태평양 연구소 초청 형식으로 미국으로 건너갔으며 당분간 객원연구원 자격으로 현지에 머물 것으로 안다고 말했습니다.

유 전 장관은 이에 따라 내일로 예정된 국회 외교통상통일 위원회의 외교부 국정감사에 증인으로 출석할 수 없다는 사유서를 외교부를 통해 국회에 제출한 것으로 전해졌습니다.

유 전 장관이 이처럼 국정감사를 앞두고 미국으로 건너간데 대해 외교부 안팎에서는 또다시 비판에 직면할 것을 우려한 일종의 도피성 해외 체류 아니냐는 비판이 일고 있습니다.
