5 Mil. Won Meant for Respect of Ex-President

The person who deliberately left 5 million won in cash beside the late former President Park Chung-hee (1917-1979) earlier this month was found to be a 54-year-old man who respected the leader, police said Tuesday.

The man, identified as Lee, told the police that he left the money because he admires the late president who led the country's industrialization efforts in the 1960-1970s despite his dictatorial streak, according to the Dongjak Police Station.

Police searched for the owner of the money after the bundle of 10,000 won notes was found by guards beside the tomb at the Seoul National Cemetery on April 9.

Police succeeded in tracking him down after investigating video clips from a surveillance camera installed at the tomb.

The man was quoted as saying, ``After withdrawing the money from a bank near the cemetery, I left it at the tomb because I have greatly respected and admired former President Park Chung-hee.''

Police also secured another video tape of a surveillance camera at the bank where the man said he withdrew the cash.

Police said the money will be returned to the man once it is confirmed that he was actually the one to have left it there.

이 달 초 현찰 500만원을 고(故) 박정희 대통령 묘소에 놓고 간 사람이 54세의 남자로 이 지도자에 대한 존경의 표시로 놓고 갔다고 경찰이 화요일 밝혔다.

동작 경찰서에 따르면 이 모씨는 경찰에서 1960-70년대 독재를 했음에도 불구하고 이 나라의 근대화 노력을 주도했던 대통령으로 숭앙한 나머지 자신이 이 돈을 두고 갔다고 진술했다.

경찰은 4월 9일 동작동 국립묘지의 고 박대통령 묘 옆에서 관리인이 10만원 권 수표 다발을 발견, 신고한 후 이 돈의 주인의 행방을 탐문했다.

경찰은 묘역에 설치해 놓은 감시 카메라의 비데오를 조사해 그를 추적하는데 성공했다.

이 남성은 "고 박 정희 대통령을 너무 존경하고 숭배해서 국립묘지 인근 은행에서 돈을 인출해 묘 옆에 두고 왔다"고 말한 것으로 전해졌다.

경찰은 자신이 현금을 인출했다는 은행의 감시카메라 비데오도 확보했다.

경찰은 그가 실제 놓고 간 인물이 확인 되면 이 돈을 그 사람에게 돌려 줄 계획이라고 말했다.
