Reporter’s Brain Surgery

Star CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon, performed brain surgery on a 12-year-old Haitian girl Monday aboard a U.S. military ship, AFP reported.

The girl, whose name was not released, was injured in last week's devastating earthquake, and was diagnosed as having a 1.2-cm chunk of concrete embedded in her skull.

The ship's surgeon called for a neurosurgeon, which are in short supply in the region amidst the mammoth and often chaotic rescue and recovery operation.

"With the help of a CNN producer, we called CNN in Atlanta who then patched us through to Doctor Gupta in Port-au-Prince," said the Vinson's Deputy Public Affairs Officer Erik Schneider.

"Someone got a hold of our international desk," 40-year-old Gupta later recalled.

"They said there was an urgent call from the Carl Vinson. So I put a call in to them and there was something about a head injury."

Assisted by Los Angeles surgeon Henri Ford and the ship's surgeon Kathryn Berndt, Gupta pulled off the surgery between his multiple reports for the international news network on the massive quake that hit the Caribbean nation.

A Navy news report confirmed the events and added that a second operation was needed to remove a sliver of debris in the girl's skull that the medical team could not initially reach.

The girl was "neurologically intact and there wasn't any penetration of the brain," said Ford, originally from Haiti.

Gupta and Ford said they anticipated the girl would make a full recovery.

칼 빈슨호의 공보부장교인 에릭 슈나이더는 "우리는 CNN 프로듀서의 도움으로 아틀랜타에 있는 CNN으로 연락을 취한 후 굽타 박사를 포르토프랭으로 보내줄 것을 요청했다"고 말했다.

굽타 박사는 그 후 "국제 데스크를 맡고 있는 사람으로부터 칼 빈슨호로부터 긴급 전화가 있었다"면서 "그래서 나는 칼 빈슨호를 방문해 머리 부상이 있음을 확인했다"고 회상했다.

굽타 박사는 로스앤젤레스의 의사 헨리 포드와 함정에 승선한 의사 카크린 번트의 도움을 받아 18일 수술을 단행했다.

미 해군 뉴스도 이 같은 일이 벌어졌음을 확인하고 의료팀이 첫 수술에서 접근할 수 없었던 소녀의 해골에 있는 은빛 조각을 제거하기 위해

두 번째 수술이 필요하다고 덧붙였다.

아이티 태생인 포드 박사는 소녀의 신경이 손상을 입지 않은 상태였으며 뇌를 관통한 흔적이 없었다고 밝혔다.

굽타 박사와 포드 박사 모두 이 소녀의 완전한 회복을 기대하고 있다고 밝혔다.
