University to Compensate Denied Promotion

Daebul University in South Jeolla Province has been ordered by a court to give 10 million won in compensation to a professor for unfair personnel management.

The Gwangju High Court Tuesday ruled in favor of the 42-year-old professor, who filed complaints against the university, claiming his school denied him a promotion because of his membership of the professors' council.

Kim applied for an associate professor position in January 2006, but it was rejected. He sued the university claiming he was unfairly treated in the process.

"The university's punishment of Kim was canceled by the Appeal Commission for Teachers due to problems in the process. Also, the university took actions against those who are involved with the professors' council," the court said.

If the verdict is confirmed, it would be the first-ever case where a court rules against a university over promotion.
