Water Supply for 40,000 Households Disrupted

Some 40,000 households in Incheon had their water supply cut due to a damaged pipe Sunday night.

A large water pipe at a construction site of the Gyeongin Canal in western Incheon was ruptured around 9 p.m., Sunday. The 18-kilometer-long canal links the Han River in Seoul and the West Sea bordering Incheon.

The incident cut off water supply to houses in Geomam, Sicheon and Wondang.

"Construction workers mistakenly hit the water main during excavations for a bridge over the canal," said an official of the Waterworks Headquarters of Incheon City.

The construction company started to repair the pipe immediately after the accident, but it took more than 12 hours to complete the task.

The suspension of water supplies caused much inconvenience for nearby residents. Some did not have hot water and heating at some houses stopped functioning overnight.

Authorities provided a temporary water service using emergency pipes while repairing.
