425 Earthquakes Occur in Past Decade

A total of 425 earthquakes, most of them weak, were detected on the Korean Peninsula over the past 10 years, according to a report from the National Emergency Management Agency.

A total of 49 quakes have taken place so far this year, up 69 percent from the 29 recorded in 2000, according to the report. By province, North Gyeongsang Province ranked first with 93, followed by South Jeolla Province with 58 and South Chungcheong Province with 47.

Hwanghae Province in North Korea came next with 27, it said. “Many buildings are without anti-quake technology. They are extremely susceptible to earthquakes,” an agency official said.
