Dongguk Univ. to Appeal Law School Case

Dongguk University said it will file an appeal with the Supreme Court against an appellate court's ruling in favor of the government over the selection of universities to open law schools.
The school's decision came days after a Seoul appellate court ruled that the government's decision not to grant a law school license to Dongguk couldn't be revoked because "it would cause too much confusion."
However, the court acknowledged that the government breached related laws by allowing professors from universities competing with Dongguk for the selection to play a role on the screening committee.
The university plans to file a compensation suit once the top court delivers its verdict.
The school has said it spent about 20 billion won to build facilities in preparation for the opening of the law school.
Formed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Legal Education Committee, consisting of professors and government officials, selected 25 out of 41 bidding universities in December, 2007.
Universities that failed to be selected have claimed the process was unfair and professors of the bidding universities should have been excluded from the screening committee.
