Recruitment Starts for 60 Foreign Interpreters

The Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs is recruiting 60 foreigners as interpreter-translators for foreign residents who cannot speak Korean.
Those hired will provide services for hospitals, schools, judiciary organizations or other administrative offices. Applicants should have resided in Korea for more than two years with diplomas beyond the high school level. Speaking and writing Korean fluently is also required.
They will work at local ``Multiculture Centers'' five days per week, with occasional business trips. They will receive professional training from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies on counseling, information provision and education, beforehand.
The government is also recruiting 10 staff members to help children from multicultural families receive proper education. Those with university degrees in language development, Korean and childhood education are encouraged to apply, and, if hired, will be sent to nearby daycare or nursery facilities on behalf of their multiculture centers. Those selected will also have to undergo additional training at Sogang University.
Applications are due Feb. 12.
The workers will start work from March under temporary contracts. Translator-interpreters will be paid 950,000 monthly, while educational staff will receive 1.65 million won monthly, both with full insurance and pension coverage.
``This will be an opportunity for migrant spouses to use their talents to help others while making money. The plan symbolizes Korea's embracing children from international marriages as members of our society,'' a ministry spokesman said.
