Security Law Violators Declines
The number of people who were indicted by prosecutors on charges of violating the anti-communist National Security Law has declined in recent years.
According to Rep. Choi Byung-gook of the opposition Grand National Party, the number accused of violating the security law since 2001 totals 605.
The number of people indicted hit its highest in 2002 with 167. But the number has decreased since then and falling below one hundred for the first time in 2004. Only 38 people were indicted last year.
The prosecution is also changing its attitude from a hard-line stance to a more lenient one.
In 2001, about 86 percent, or 120 of 138 people indicted were arrested. In 2005, 55 percent or 26 of 47 indicted were taken into custody.
