Exhibition 'Kandinsky, Malevich & Russian Avant-Garde' to be held in Seoul
The Korea Times and its sister paper Hankook Ilbo will host the “Kandinsky, Malevich & Russian Avant-Garde” art exhibition at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul, from Dec. 31 to April 17, 2022.
The Russian avant-garde movement enjoyed its heyday in the early 20th century. But after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin labeled the movement as “bourgeois,” the artwork had to be locked away in the museums’ storage vaults, away from public view, for more than six decades.
It was only after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 that this pioneering genre of art gained the global spotlight and became known for its influence in 20th century art, architecture and design.
The works of renowned Russian avant-garde masters that will arrive in Korea this December gained recognition at the 2018 exhibitions held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. They have also been exhibited in Hungary and the Czech Republic.
The featured painters will include abstract art pioneer Wassily Kandinsky (“Improvisation” series), Kazimir Malevich (“Suprematism”), Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova best known for the Rayonism style, as well as Alexander Rodchenko, who left his mark in modern photographic art and advertising design.
