Former HUFS president named professor emeritus

Park Chul, former president of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) and a renowned expert on Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, became an honorary professor of the university’s department of Spanish, Sept. 1, according to the school, Tuesday.

Park served as president of the university from 2006 to 2014, and concentrated his studies on “Don Quixote,” Cervantes major work, while visiting Spain afterward. After his retirement as a professor last month, he has been focusing on research as an honorary professor rather than lectures, said Moon Nam-kwon, the dean of the department.

“Park is an expert who has achieved a lot in his research on the work of Cervantes, as one of two life members of the Real Academia Espanola in Asia,” Moon told The Korea Times.

Park, current chairman of the directors for the Korea Center for Cervantes Studies, completed translating all of Cervantes publications into Korean in 2014.

“With my colleagues at the center, I will continuously study and popularize Cervantes’ work by giving lectures to college and high school students,” Park told The Korea Times.
