KAIST professor to lecture at renowned tech forums

Lee Keon-jae, a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), is going to America to speak at two internationally renowned forums, in recognition for his developing flexible NAND flash memory chips.
Lee, 40, will visit the United States next month to attend the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in December to explain his technique for producing flexible NAND chips. He is also invited to the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) scheduled to take place in February next year. The two forums are the world’s most pre-eminent seminars on electronic devices and semiconductor technology, KAIST said Thursday. It is rare for a Korean professor to be invited to lecture there.
The professor studied materials science and engineering at Yonsei University before obtaining a doctorate in materials engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. He has served as a professor at KAIST’s Department of Electrical Engineering since 2009.
Recently he has focused on developing technologies for producing flexible materials that can be applied to everyday life. The flexible NAND flash memory chips are expected to be widely used for developing flexible handsets. His latest research also includes flexible light-emitting diodes (LED) for implantable biomedical applications.
Lee is currently running a special laboratory focused on developing new flexible nano-materials. The research group is working to develop what it calls “self-powered flexible electronic systems” using nanomaterials and electronic technology.
Lee’s achievement with flexible NAND chips was published in the October edition of Nano Letters, the renowned U.S.-based scientific journal.
He said that flexible memory chips will be used to develop wearable computers that can be installed anywhere.
