Chung Kyung-won, an emeritus professor of industrial design at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), has received a top award in the design industry in the United States, the institute said Monday.

The professor was awarded the prize by the Design Management Institute (DMI), an international organization for the industry, on Sept. 28 at the Royal Serena Hotel in Boston for his dedication to promoting the value of the design industry worldwide, according to KAIST.

“It is a great pleasure to receive the prize, which is like the Academy Award in the design management sector,” the professor said. “I hope this will serve as a chance for Korea’s design industry to raise its profile on the global stage.”

As an academic professor, he has posted 14 theses in global design management journals and published research reports through the Harvard Business School.

While teaching at KAIST as a professor, he has also worked as the head of the Korea Institute of Design Promotion and led the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s design management sector. He also has been an advisor for design at Samsung Electronics.

Established in 1975, the DMI brings together educators, researchers and designers from around the globe to discuss creating value with designs not only from the aesthetic point of view but also in cultural, social and economic terms.

The DMI has awarded the prize to those who have contributed in the development of design and design management sector this year, commemorating its 40th anniversary.

Its judging committee, consisting of four design management experts from Britain, Germany and the United States, has chosen a total of 11 awardees through an international review.

The committee said Chung has also been recognized for leading the department of industrial design at KAIST for the last 30 years to foster it as one of the world’s top 30 design management institutes.

Alongside the award, the DMI’s board committee named Chung as a life honorary fellow, the institute said.
