Former Army surgeon Kim Tae-yoon, 35, saved the life of a private first-class who lost consciousness and collapsed in a barracks corridor.

On April 17, a week ahead of his discharge, Kim immediately ran to Pfc. Chae Wook-il, 22, after he collapsed.

“Kim performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Chae, who seemed to have heart problems,” the Army’s 2nd Operations Command in Daegu said Wednesday.

While moving Chae to Chonbuk National University Hospital, Kim continued to do CPR in an ambulance for about 30 minutes.

Before arriving at the hospital, Kim explained Chae’s condition to emergency room personnel.

The command said, “Thanks to Kim’s emergency measures, Chae could be moved to intensive care following his arrival at the hospital.”

Chest surgeon Kim Jong-heon, 39, said, “It was miraculous that Kim saved Chae, although 30 minutes had already passed after his cardiac arrest occurred,” the doctor said.

Chae regained consciousness six hours later.

His parents expressed their gratitude to Kim repeatedly.

Kim became an Army surgeon at the 72nd Communications Support Battalion of 2nd Operations Command in May 2013.

The command said he always helps those in need, even when on vacation.

Even on the day of discharge, he waited for soldiers, who returned to the command from a march, to check their condition.

Kim is now set to start his new post as a doctor at Chonbuk National University Hospital from May 1.

The Korea Times asked him for an interview but he declined politely, saying his actions were nothing to brag about.
