Kwang Dong Pharmaceutical Co. has won the top honor from the Korean Red Cross for its humanitarian efforts and corporate social responsibility programs.

The drug-maker was awarded the Supreme Honorary Grand Order of Red Cross Membership Merit by the Korean Red Cross on Friday on the occasion of the humanitarian organization’s 109th anniversary.

An award ceremony was held at the annual convention of the Korean Red Cross regional chapter on Jeju Island. The Red Cross cited other institutions and individuals for contributing to its humanitarian projects.

Kwang Dong had donated 720 million won worth of medicine to a general hospital run by the North Korea Red Cross in Pyongyang from 2004 to 2006.

The company also provided medicine to unprivileged residents on Jeju Island through the Red Cross this year. It also participated in a Red Cross program to improve the islanders’ health.

“It’s a great honor to receive such a special citation,” said Kim Hyun-sig, president of Kwang Dong Pharmaceutical. “We will continue to organize various programs to help the poor and disadvantaged.”
