US ambassador elevated to career minister

U.S. Ambassador to Korea Kathleen Stephens was elevated to career minister, according to the embassy.

It is reportedly the second highest level in U.S. diplomatic ranks, following career ambassador. The two ranks below career minister are minister counselor and counselor.

A diplomatic source was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying that the ambassador was recognized for her contributions to strengthening South Korea-U.S. relations.

The U.S. embassy in Seoul said former U.S. Ambassadors Christopher Hill and Alexander Vershbow held the rank of career minister as well.
