Integrated Changwon inaugurated

Changwon celebrated its merger with Masan and Jinhae, Thursday, becoming a city of 1.08 million people.

The ceremony at Seongsan Arts Hall was attended by over 1,500 residents and officials including Prime Minster Chung Un-chan and Changwon Mayor Park Wan-su.

In a congratulatory message Chung stressed the importance of regional development, pledging to "support Changwon's efforts to grow further"

Chung also praised the merger of the three cities, pointing out that Changwon's economy has become the largest among smaller local administrative units nationwide.

"This is the first time a merger of cities has been made by the citizens themselves," Chung said. "This event will help the southern coastal area become a major economic force in the country."

The ceremony featured screening of videos that showcased Changwon's culture, as well as performances by popular boyband Shinee, singer Tae Jin-a and other entertainers.

Meanwhile, Park was inaugurated as the first mayor of the integrated Changwon.

"Not only will we preserve our ancestors' traditions, but we will also turn Changwon into a world-class city envied by people around the world, one that our children will be proud to live in," he said in an inauguration speech.

"Just as I have made Changwon a leading city in Korea, I will also help Masan and Jinhae grow. If we put our efforts together, there will be no obstacles we can't overcome."
