Prof. Bhabha to Speak at Education Workshop

Distinguished humanities scholar Homi K. Bhabha will give the keynote speech at the annual workshop conducted by the Asia-Pacific Center of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) in Seoul, Friday.

Bhabha, who is also the director of Harvard University's Humanities Center, is known as a postcolonial theorist. He authored the book ``The Location of Culture,'' which has been translated into Korean, Spanish, Italian, German and other languages.

Born in Mumbai, India, Bhabha was educated at University of Bombay, and has masters and doctorate degrees in English and American Literature from Christ Church, University of Oxford.

Currently, he is the Anne F. Rothenberg Professor of the Humanities, Department of English at Harvard. He is also an adviser to several top art institutions such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts London and the Whitney Museum of American Arts, New York.

Bhabha has lectured extensively around the world. In 1997, Newsweek included Bhabha in the list ``100 Americans for the Next Century.'' He is currently working on two upcoming books, ``A Measure of Dwelling,'' about a theory of vernacular cosmopolitanism, and ``The Right to Narrate.''

Bhabha was invited to give a keynote speech at the 9th Asia-Pacific Training Workshop on Education for International Understanding (EIU), which opens Friday. Minister of Education, Science and Technology Ahn Byong-man will give welcoming remarks at the ceremony, which will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., on the 19th floor Press Room at the Korea Press Foundation, downtown Seoul.

The annual workshop gathers 40 teachers from 25 Asia-Pacific countries for 10 days of lectures and seminars on strengthening education that promotes a culture of peace. It is conducted by APCEIU, an organization of UNESCO, established to promote international understanding and a culture of peace through education.
