Korea Railroad (Korail) CEO Huh Joon-young has been elected as the Asian regional head of the International Union of Railways.

Members of the organization unanimously selected Huh, 57, at the Asian Regional Assembly held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Friday.

As a representative of 30 railway agencies in 19 nations, Huh will preside over meetings and the union's general assembly, develop joint projects and make a budget during his two-year term through 2010. He will also be the board director of the union.

During the assembly, Korail also won the bid to host a bullet train workshop and the next Asian assembly in Daejeon in November.

``Huh's election is expected to strengthen the international position of Korea's railway and help Korail's promotion to construct railways overseas,'' a Korail official said.

In May 2008, Korea hosted the union's general assembly and the World Congress on Railway Research in Seoul.

Huh became the Korail chief in March.
