Moon Jae-in

The 19th presidential election for South Korea is scheduled to be held on May 9. In the early race, Moon Jae-in of the Democratic Party of Korea led the competition until Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party began catching up with the longstanding frontrunner.

Predicting who will be the winner of the election is a conventional affair for many fortune tellers. This time, there are some intriguing facts associated with most of the contenders’ saju. For the saju masters, forecasting the results of the election must be rational on top of its foreknowable aspect, because it is often tarnished by the personal political views of the fortune teller.

Looking back on some of the previous elections, not only those of Korea but of other countries, such as the U.S. election, the results of the poll have been so close and quite a few fortune tellers made wrong predictions. In past Korean presidential elections, one of my acquaintances strongly insisted that Moon of the then Democratic United Party would win, which turned out to be miscalculated and it actually irritated many of his clients. It was obviously caused by his personal political preference. In this election, he predicts the same result that Moon will win and the reason he provides is the 2017 fortune that Moon is “gaining power.”

Now that the polling day is just a couple of weeks away and all candidates have completed their official registrations, it would be meaningful to compare their saju and how this year’s fortune falls on each of them. In this year’s election, an intriguing fact has caught my attention regarding the saju of the candidates. They all have a certain kind of sameness.

Most of their day masters are wood, born in winter or close to winter. Moon has yin wood (Eul) day master born in January. Ahn’s day master is also yin wood while born in February. Hong Joon-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party has yin wood day master and was born in December. Yoo Seong-min of the Bareun Party has yang wood (Gap) day master born in January. All the male candidates except for the one female candidate of the Justice Party are wood day masters born in winter.

The significant component that must be considered to determine the fortune of the possible president is the element to represent authority or power. It is called the career star in terms of saju and it is the element that regulates the day master. For the wood day master, the career star is the energy of metal. And the next critical element to influence the results of the election is the energy that is generated by the day master. It is called the expression star and implies the day master’s popularity. For the wood day master, the expression star is the fire element.

2017 has the energy of fire as its heavenly stem and that of metal as its earthly branch. Coincidentally, the day masters for all candidates are identical and this year’s energy signifies the same influence, power and popularity for all.

Under these circumstances, what we need to figure out is their 10-year luck pillar. For Moon, his 10-year pillar (ages 64-74) suggests a strong metal energy of both the heavenly and earthly letters while it is an earth and metal combination for Ahn. Among all of the candidates, Moon has the strongest political power pillar and Ahn has the second strongest.

On the other hand, if we purely compare the saju of the two, Ahn’s saju is stronger than Moon’s in terms of perseverance and patience. Moon seems to be thoughtful and considerate. His powerful career star started its meaningful influence last year, 2016.
