Violinist Kim Bomsori has signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon (DG), according to the prestigious recording company earlier this week.
Her debut solo recording “Violin on Stage,” recorded in Poland with the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra, will be released in June, according to Universal Music. The recording features pieces written for ballet and opera.
“I feel truly honored to join Deutsche Grammophon and follow in the footsteps of so many legendary artists,” Kim said in a statement. “The Yellow Label stands for excellence and the best of tradition. I hope my new album for DG will touch and inspire listeners of all ages.”
DG expressed its excitement in signing a deal with the star violinist. “Her extraordinary virtuosity is matched by an ability to make the violin sing. We love the way she's prepared to take risks in the moment of performance and the heartfelt poetry of her playing,” said Clemens Trautmann, president of Deutsche Grammophon. “Bomsori's DG debut solo album is a tremendous showcase for her artistry and we look forward to creating many more recordings with her in the future.”
A handful of musicians from Korea have signed with the company, such as star pianist Cho Seong-jin, a Chopin competition laureate. But Kim is the first Korean female violinist to sign with the company.
The 31-year-old violinist has won many prizes and rose to international stardom with her phenomenal interpretations of Shostakovich and other major violin concerti at the 2016 International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition, one of the most coveted violin prizes in the world. Since then, she has become a fixture in the world's most celebrated concert halls.
Born in Daegu in 1989, she was trained at the Juilliard School in New York and received the 2018 Young Artist Award from the culture ministry. She is the winner of the 62nd ARD International Music Competition and has also won prizes at the Tchaikovsky International Competition, the Queen Elisabeth Competition, and International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, among others.
Kim plays a 1774 violin by Joannes Baptista Guadagnini.
