Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: cord blood collection

Medipost, an innovative company leading Korea's biotechnology sector, announced Monday that celebrity couples, including Jang Dong-gun-Ko So-young and Jung Jo-gook-Kim Seong-eun couples, have registered for cord blood banking.

Jang and Ko decided to sign up for the cord blood storage plan two months prior to the birth of their child, a company spokesman said.

Unlike other plans which store the cord blood for 15 to 20 years, “Celltree Noblesse,” the package that Jang and Ko selected is to keep the blood for the entire lifetime of their child, according to the spokesman.

This particular package has only recently been released, so about 100 people are registered for it across the nation.

Cord blood, the blood that remains in your baby's umbilical cord after the it has been cut, is a rich source of unique stem cells that can be used in medical treatments, doctors say. The blood is immediately discarded after childbirth if the parents do not decide to collect it and store it in an appropriate laboratory.

Like bone marrow, cord blood is an invaluable source of a type of stem cell to regenerate healthy blood and immune cells in cancer patients. It is used to cure 80 serious diseases, including leukemia, cancers, and blood disorders.

장동건, 고소영 부부 출산 앞두고 제대혈 보관

세포치료제 및 제대혈기업인 메디포스트는 장동건ㆍ고소영, 정조국ㆍ김성은 씨 부부 등 유명 연예인과 운동선수의 제대혈 보관상품 가입이 이어지고 있다고 16일 밝혔다.

장ㆍ고 씨는 출산일을 2개월 가량 앞두고 자녀의 제대혈을 보관하기로 결정했다.

이 부부는 기존 15-20년 보관 상품과는 다른 평생 보관형 ‘셀트리 노블레스’에 가입했다. 이 상품에는 최근 출시돼 전국적으로 약 100명 정도밖에 가입하지 않은 상태다.

제대혈은 신생아의 탯줄속 혈액을 말하는 것으로, 이를 분리ㆍ검사 후 냉동 보관했다가 자녀가 백혈병, 뇌성마비 등 난치성 질환에 걸렸을 때 치료제로 사용된다.

정ㆍ김 부부도 이날 제대혈 보관을 신청했다고 메디포스트는 밝혔다.
