Plus-Size Models

Mark Fast, 29, who is a rising knitwear designer emphasizing a variety of body sizes of women, has deployed several plus-size models, becoming another talk of the town in London this year.

In a collection of the London Fashion Week on Feb. 18, Fast had "plus-size" models (European size 40, U.S. size 10) to put on the knitwear he designed. Fast was at the center of a dispute during similar fashion week last September, too, when a stylist was forced to deny she stormed out of his catwalk show because he was using larger than normal models.

Sarah Watkinson, the founder of 12+ UK, the agency that supplied some of the models, said that while Fast was "very committed" to showing his clothes on realistic-looking women, no other designers at London Fashion Week were using her models.

Recently, thinner models have been criticized in the fashion community. Although designers opt for thinnest models for better look, youths have been implanted with the distorted mind that thinner body is better look, causing serious problems to the young generation.

It is evaluated that Fast's use of at least some plus-size women feeds in to the debate over whether it's appropriate for the fashion industry to keep employing the thinnest of the thin to carry its clothing.

여성의 다양한 신체 사이즈를 강조하는 것으로 유명한 신예 디자이너 마크 패스트가 통통한 모델을 패션쇼에 올려 화제가 되고 있다.

지난 19일 런던 패션위크 컬렉션에서 패스트는 라지 사이즈 (유럽40, 미국10) 모델들에게 자신의 니트웨어를 입혔다. 패스트는 지난해 9월에도 라지 사이즈 모델을 기용하려 해 화제가 됐었다.

모델들이 속한 '12+UK'의 설립자인 세라 왓킨슨은 패스트가 현실적인 몸매의 여성들을 통해 그의 옷을 보여주는 일에 "매우 열정적"이라며 다른 어떤 디자이너도 라지 사이즈 모델들을 구하려 하지는 않는다고 말했다.

최근 패션계에서는 앙상할 정도로 마른 몸매의 모델들이 비판을 받고 있다. 디자이너들이 마른 몸매의 모델을 선호하기 때문이지만 청소년들에게 외모에 관한 왜곡된 인식을 심어줄 수 있어 문제가 되고 있다.

패스트가 적어도 일부 뚱뚱보 여성 모델을 기용함으로써 패션을 보이기 위해 너무 야윈 몸매의 모델을 기용하는 것이 적절한지에 대한 논쟁에 새로운 도화선이 된 것으로 평가되고 있다.
