Two Koreas begin clearing mines along DMZ

The two Koreas began removing landmines buried along the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), Monday, to fulfill a joint military agreement signed during the latest inter-Korean summit last month, the Ministry of National Defense said Monday.
남북한은 지난달에 체결한 공동 군사협약을 이행하기 위해 월요일 비무장지대(DMZ)에 있는 군사분계선(MDL)을 따라 매립된 지뢰를 제거하기 시작했다고 국방부가 발표했다.
The move is in line with their bilateral agreement to disarm the DMZ. Both sides will remove mines on either side of the MDL for 20 days, according to the defense ministry.
이번 조치는 비무장지대(DMZ) 무장해제를 위한 양국 간 합의에 따른 것이다. 국방부에 따르면, 남북은 군사분계선(MDL) 양측의 지뢰를 20일 동안 제거할 계획이다.
“Starting with the removing of mines, both sides will make efforts to carry out the military agreement in a systematic and normal manner,” the ministry said in a statement. South Korea plans to focus on clearing away mines buried in eastern and western grassy areas in the DMZ as well as those around surveillance towers.
국방부는 “지뢰 제거부터 시작해, 양측은 체계적이고 정상적인 방법으로 군사 협정을 이행하기 위해 노력할 것”이라고 발표했다. 남측은 비무장지대(DMZ)의 동부와 서부초원에 매장된 지뢰뿐만 아니라 감시탑 주변 지뢰를 치우는 데 주력할 계획이다.
Under the agreement, both sides will also clear mines and explosives buried at “Broken Arrow,” an upland area in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, for two months from Monday.
이 협정에 따라, 양측은 강원도 철원의 고지대인 '브로큰 애로우'에 묻힌 지뢰와 폭발물도 월요일부터 두 달 동안 제거할 예정이다.
Alongside the JSA, Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to remove mines there as it was chosen as a trial place to look for the remains of those who were killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.
그 지역은 1950년에서 1953년 사이 한국전쟁 중 사망한 사람들의 유해를 찾는 첫 시행장소로 선택되었기에 남측과 북측은 JSA와 함께 지뢰제거에 동의했다.
