'Subcontracted employee's mistake caused network outage'

A mistake by an employee of a firm KT outsourced for its routing work was to blame for the nationwide network disruption earlier this week, the Ministry of Science and ICT said Friday.
금요일 과학기술정보통신부는 지난주 초에 발생한 전국적인 네트워크 오류가 KT 협력업체 직원에 의해 발생한 라우팅 작업에 때문이라고 전했다.
KT's internet network error disabled both wired and wireless services around 11:20 a.m. on Monday.
지난 월요일 오전 11시 20분경 KT의 인터넷 네트워크 오류로 인해 유무선 통신망이 마비되었다.
Most services were back by noon, but some disruptions lasted longer.
대부분의 서비스들은 12시쯤 복구되었으나 일부 오류는 오랫동안 지속되었다.
The telecom company stated in the days following the network failure that a routing error was the cause and that the large-scale disruption was the result of work that was performed during the day instead of when it was supposed to have been carried out ― at night when there is less network traffic.
KT는 네트워크 장애가 발생한 다음날 그 원인이 라우팅 오류라고 전했고 대규모 장애는 원칙적으로 트래픽이 적은 야간에 이루어져야 하는 라우팅 작업을 주중에 진행해 발생했다고 덧붙였다.
"We found that an employee entered the wrong command while changing a network router at a location in Busan," Second Vice Minister Cho Kyeong-sik said in a briefing on the results of the inspection into the cause of the network failure.
조경식 과학기술정보통신부 2차관은 네트워크 장애 원인 분석 결과 브리핑에서 "부산국사에서 기업망 라우터를 교체하던 중에 잘못된 명령어를 입력한 것을 확인했다"고 말했다.
The ministry said disruptions to phone calls and text messaging were caused as people increasingly turned to these mediums when internet services stopped working for them.
과기정통부는 인터넷 서비스가 작동을 멈췄을 때 전화와 문자를 사용하기 위해 많은 사람들이 몰리면서 장애가 발생했다고 밝혔다.
IPTV subscribers also experienced disruptions as many reset their devices following the failures and traffic surged accordingly.
또 IPTV 구독자들도 통신 장애를 겪어 기기를 껐다 켜면서 이에 따라 트래픽이 급증한 것으로 보인다.
KT CEO Ku Hyeon-mo said a day earlier the company would compensate those impacted via a center to be set up next week.
지난 일요일 구현모 KT 대표는 다음주에 설치될 피해 신고센터를 통해 피해를 입은 이용자들에게 보상할 것이라고 말했다.
The ministry said it will check whether KT follows through with its pledge for compensation.
과기정통부는 KT가 보상 방안을 이행하는지 지켜볼 것이라고 전했다.
