Turkish Ambassador to Korea Salih Murat Tamer underscored the historic friendship and deepening partnership between Turkey and Korea at a reception Wednesday marking the 102nd anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Turkey.

“It is a great honor and joy to celebrate the 102nd anniversary of the Republic of Turkey together with you tonight,” Ambassador Tamer said during the event in Seoul. “On this meaningful occasion, we proudly remember the enduring legacy of the Republic of Turkey and the deep friendship we share with the people of the Republic of Korea.”

Tamer recalled that 102 years ago, under the visionary leadership of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Republic of Turkey declared its determination for independence to the world. “Founded on the principle that ‘Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation,’ the Republic of Turkey was built on the ideals of freedom, justice and progress,” he said.

He noted that under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey is advancing with confidence into what it calls the “Century of Turkey,” based on a strong democracy, dynamic economy and active diplomacy contributing to peace and stability.

“Turkey stands determined to shape a better future together with our friends and partners, including the Republic of Korea,” he added.

The envoy highlighted the historic ties between the two nations, forged during the Korean War. “The friendship between Turkey and Korea is not only written in treaties — it is written in blood, in sacrifice and in history,” he said. “Turkish soldiers fought bravely and selflessly on these very lands, thousands of kilometers away from home, for the freedom of Korea.”

Tamer also pointed to strong economic ties, saying bilateral trade has surpassed $11 billion, and cooperation in renewable and peaceful nuclear energy will further elevate the partnership.

“The 102nd anniversary of our Republic is a symbol of our pride in the past and our confidence in the future,” he said, expressing gratitude to all who joined the celebration.

In her congratulatory remarks, Korea’s Vice Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kang Yun-jin paid tribute to Turkey’s sacrifices during the Korean War and its enduring humanitarian spirit. “Seventy-five years ago, when Korea was in crisis during the Korean War, Turkey sent more than 21,000 brave soldiers — the fourth-largest contingent among 22 participating nations,” Kang said. “The government and people of Korea will never forget our brothers from Turkey, who shed blood for our freedom.”

Kang expressed Korea’s commitment to further strengthening ties in diverse areas, including the economy, culture and defense. “Korea will continue to stand with our brother nation Turkey, upholding the shared values of freedom, peace and human rights in the international community,” she said.
