South Korea has been tapped to chair an international medical device regulatory organization that could help it play a role in setting industry standards going forward, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said Thursday.
The International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF), launched in 2011, is the body that sets policies and guidelines on medical devices and strives for harmonization and optimization in the sector that is key to enhancing health services provided by devices made all around the world.
The organization is made up of 10 member states, including South Korea, the United States, China, Japan, Russia and the European Union.
"As the IMDRF chair in 2021, the country will play host to the general assembly in that year, which will allow overseas regulators to directly meet local medical device producers," a ministry official said. (Yonhap)
