A Korean man was kidnapped in the Philippines in October, a report said on Saturday. It is unclear why the kidnapping was not revealed earlier.
Citing diplomatic sources, Yonhap News Agency reported that a group of unidentified men kidnapped the businessman, in his 50s, near his home in Angeles.
Two weeks later, the man’s family paid a ransom, but the man has not been released.
It is unknown if the man is alive or not.
South Korea’s foreign ministry is working with its Philippines counterpart to confirm whether he is alive and to track down the kidnappers.
Some people suspect the local police were involved because a car belonging to a member of a police officer’s family was allegedly used in the kidnapping.
Since 2013, on average 10 Koreans have been kidnapped and killed in the Philippines each year. This year, eight Koreans have been killed there, many in contract-style slayings.
