China busts Internet scam ring involving S. Koreans

Chinese authorities have arrested members of an alleged Internet scam ring that consists of 31 South Koreans and Chinese nationals, Yonhap reported Friday.
China’s public security ministry said the suspects allegedly stole financial information from South Koreans using phishing, which sends emails to victims to lure them to a website that asks for their passwords and security codes. Criminals then use the information for transactions under the victims’ names.
The ministry said the fraud ring was based in Yanbian, next to the North Korean border where 30 percent of the population is ethnic Korean. They robbed victims of more than 3 million yuan ($470,000) a week.
The suspects are among 900 detained by the Chinese government after a six-month crackdown on Internet and telephone scams.
