Ambassador woos Korean investors
Omani Ambassador Mohamed Salim Alharthy touted his country as a good investment location for Korean companies and encouraged Koreans to regard the nation as a tourist destination.
“There are many projects, and investment opportunities and incentives in Oman which Korean companies can make the most of,” he said during a speech at a celebration of its 44th National Day at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on Tuesday. The Embassy of Oman also celebrated the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Korea during the event.
Ambassador Alharthy noted that Korean companies have a stronger presence in Oman as they have joined several construction and industrial projects, adding that the bilateral trade volume has doubled in recent years.
Oman is one of the major natural gas suppliers to Korea.
“Oman is also a tourist destination that has rich cultural heritage and unique geological formation, and tourists are warmly received with Arabic hospitality,” the envoy said
Alharthy said his government was willing to expand bilateral ties into non-natural gas areas, including culture, health and education.
During a speech at the commemorating event, Cho Tae-young, first vice foreign minister, said Oman is a close partner of Korea. He said Oman is now experiencing a renaissance and its citizens are enjoying high living standards, thanks to effective leadership and strong support from the general public.
Quoting a United Nations Development Program report, Cho said Oman made striking progress in education and health between 1970 and 2010. Based on domestic stability, he said, Oman also played a critical role in regional stability.
The Embassy of Oman showcased paintings, photos featuring the Arabic country and traditional items during the anniversary celebration to raise Koreans’ awareness of Omani culture.
The embassy has hosted a series of events, including an open house and a touring exhibition featuring Omani culture, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Korea-Canada energy forum held
The Korean Embassy in Canada, in collaboration with the Korean Consulate Office in Quebec, hosted the sixth energy forum with the Quebec provincial government Tuesday.
The annual energy forum has been held since 2009 between the Korean Embassy and the provincial governments of Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec, all of which are endowed with rich natural resources.
People in the energy business within the two countries, government officials and experts joined the forum, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This year’s forum focused on energy infrastructure and renewable energy because Korean investors are interested in those areas, the ministry said.
High-ranking provincial government officials of the two countries, including Christyne Tremblay, deputy minister of energy and natural resources, delivered speeches, followed by business matching between Korean companies and businesses in Quebec.
The foreign ministry said Ambassador Cho Hee-yong will meet ministers and other high-ranking Canadian officials to discuss ways to expand energy cooperation between the two countries.
