Actors Hwang Min-hyun and Kim So-hyun are set to strike up a romance with the tvN's upcoming romantic comedy series “My Lovely Liar.”

The new series, which will start airing on Monday, revolves around a woman, Mok Sol-hee (Kim), who has born with the ability to know if people are telling lies. She used to think of it as a gift, but soon realizes the harsh reality and learns it's a curse that has led her to have a deep mistrust of humans.

She masquerades as a shaman, using the ability to determine lies for clients. One day, she meets a successful composer and producer, Kim Do-ha (Hwang Min-hyun), as her new next-door neighbor and soon finds interest in him when she doesn't detect any lies from him.

The series is led by Nam Sung-woo, who has helmed numerous rom-com series like "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo" (2016) and “My Roommate Is a Gumiho” (2021), and is penned by Seo Jung-eun, who scripted the 2021 rom-com series "Let Me Be Your Knight."

“In your life, you will come across countless lies. So I think (the series) will have a lot of elements that viewers can relate to,” the director said during the online press conference for the series Thursday.

“Although the plot has fantasy, I tried to depict how the characters come to form relationships and their true feelings using a lie as a central theme.”

The director added that he emphasized the rom-com part of the series, using his expertise.

“I thought about how we can get over lies. And it's with an honest heart and love. I've done a few romantic comedies and I feel I've used all the know-how I've acquired through them in here. I tried to emphasize that in this romantic comedy.”

Kim said she tried to portray her character as relatable, despite her special ability.

“Instead of trying to give off a peculiar vibe because she has the ability, I tried to portray her as a normal person who turns professional when she is using her ability as she works. I wanted to create the character as someone grounded to reality,” she said, adding that she had imagined what it would feel to have the ability in real life.

“Everyone would've imagined what it would be like if you can detect lies. But when I experienced it in acting, it was exhausting. You judge everyone based on whether they lie or not. So you don't keep anyone around you and shut down from them, which gets lonely.”

Hwang is taking a first stab at the romance genre with this series. He shared that the experienced director and co-star helped him through.

“I was really worried at first because I don't usually have emotional ups and downs and am an easy-going person. But as the director is a master in rom-com and Kim has quite a lot of experience so I got a lot of help. You can look forward to a series that will leave your heart all aflutter,” he said.

“My Lovely Liar” will air Mondays and Tuesdays at 8:50 p.m.
