Actor Namgoong Min will play the lead role in MBC's new TV spy-action series “Black Sun” (a literal translation from its Korean title).

The broadcaster said Thursday that the series will premiere in the second half of next year, with the actor, 43, as the main character.

The 15 billion won ($13.7 million) blockbuster series is a co-production with waave, a South Korean video streaming platform, MBC said.

“Black Sun” ― written by Park Seok-ho, whose previous work includes the thriller series “The Guardians” (2017) and “She Knows Everything” (2020) ― revolves around a South Korean National Intelligence Service agent.

Namgoong plays the experienced agent Han Ji-hyuk, who was admired by fellow agents but mysteriously goes missing. He returns to the agency a year later to discover who was responsible.

Namgoong debuted in 2001 with a minor role in the film “Bungee Jumping of their Own.” He has starred in various films and TV series, including tvN's “My Secret Hotel” (2014) and the SBS series “Hot Stove League” (2019).

He is currently starring in the crime-thriller series “Awaken” on tvN.
