Suk Ok-ee, the wife of South Korea’s oldest celebrity Song Hae, died of a chronic disease on Saturday, Song’s agency said on Sunday. She was 83.
Song was informed of her death at a hospital where he is being treated for flu.
Song, 92, and Suk married in 1953, shortly after the Korean War. They did not have a wedding ceremony because they were poor. They had an official ceremony, organized by a TV show, in 2015 to celebrate their 63rd anniversary.
Song is Korea’s oldest, and one of its most widely known, celebrities. He is known for his long-standing career as host of KBS TV’s “National Song Contest” since 1988.
Suk’s funeral will be held at Gangnam Severance Hospital at 10 a.m. on Monday.
